Final Project (Final)

Went to buy mahjong paper to set up my simple "studio" so that the background is white and just like my previous attempt, I had to experiment with the minimal reflection angle, lighting condition, etc before I can do my actual shooting.

And this is my final version of my conceptual photography project:

Description: Toys represent ones’ imagination, aspirations and innocent, childhood fantasies. Looking at what used to keep kids entertained for hours in the olden days bring back memories and nostalgia moments for the older generation. Toys of yesterday capture popular toys of the 1960s to 1980s in Singapore and it suggests that just as memories of many of Singaporean who grew up with them, the toys are fading away with time. Children in the present and the future are not playing with these toys anymore. When a futuristic audience look at these photos, it allows them to ponder and imagine how life might have been as compared to their present days.

Final Project v2

I ransacked my whole house to look for a suitable glass case to do the shoot and I finally found a fish tank can be my glass case. However, there's wallpaper on one side of the tank, so I had to remove it. Then, I experimented with many different ways of placing the case with my object and I finally decide upon this. In addition, there were issue of reflection as well and I had to find the suitable angle and lighting condition so that the reflection is minimized.

Here's my second attempt:

Marbles

Kuti Kuti

5 Stones

Chapteh

Rubber Band

Paper Ball

Balloon

Rainbow Spring

The objects were placed in an enclosed glass box so that it is more consistent and more suitable for my theme, “Toys of Yesterday”; however, the background was a little distracting.

I should experiment with either a white or a black background so that the background will not be distracting.

Final Project v1

We are required to produce a sequence of 5 to 8 conceptual images based on ONE theme.

I am always fascinated by those old vintage toys that people used to play when they are young. It suggests that days in the past are so much simpler whereby children are easily contented with the simple toys that they have. Hence, I came up with the idea of capturing toys of the past.

My initial idea was to visit the museum to capture the various toys there but I have to take into account the different aspect of taking photographs in the museum, like the placement of objects in to museum, the reflection of the glass casing, the large amount of different types of toys, etc. Therefore, I decided not to capture those toys in the museum. Instead, I decide to try to search for the available items that I could get.

After some discussion with Jing, I found that my idea of capturing the different category of toys is too broad because different people actually play with different toys. In other words, people of different country, different generation, different ethnic group, and different age group play very different toys. Hence, my idea had to be more specific in order to portray it more effectively.

Finally, I settled upon the popular toys of the 1960s to 1980s in Singapore as those are the most available objects that I could get.

This was my initial attempt:

Kuti
Marbles
5 stones
Rubber band
Balloons
Chapteh
Rainbow spring
Snake and ladder
Chess

Comments: The objects were taken from different angles, hence, inconsistent.

The Moment (Sony contest)

Rationale:
This assignment is also an in‐class contest, sponsored by Sony as part of its promotion of the launch of Sony’s new camera SLT‐A33. As the title describes, the moment is a split second when something happens and the emotions are captured. The criteria for selection of the best works in the contest are the photos should be pleasing to the eye.

This was the shot chosen for the SONY contest using the Sony SLT-A33 camera:

f/5.6, 1/500 sec, 55mm, ISO-320
