These were the questions given:
1. In the exhibition, choose a few series of work that inspired you. Explain why.
2. Observe how photographers convey their concept/idea through their chosen media and subject matter. Choose one series of work that you think the photographer has effectively convey his/her concept in his/her work.
3. Observe how photographers present their work (i.e. choice of framing, hanging etc.). Choose one or a few series of work that you think the photographer(s) has effectively present his/her/their work.
These are some of the work that inspired me:
Interior Relations: Portraits of Domestic Workers in South Africa
Fade Away
In case it rains in Heaven
In terms of concepts, I like Fade Away by Kris Vervaeke and In case it rains in Heaven by Kurt Tong.
For Fade Away, I find it interesting to see that the photographer capture the photo on the tombstone as if they were an actual portrait. In this series, the photographer is trying to say something about the concept of death whereby people simply disappear with time. I feel that the meaning is created very well because the photos are all faded beyond recognition and how much it has faded away with time is captured.
For In case it rains in Heaven, I like the way the objects are all captured on a black background. Paper offerings on a black background is interesting and I feel that the use of black background can also mean the other world.
In terms of framing/hanging, I like the Interior Relations: Portraits of domestic workers in South Africa by Ian Van Coller. This series shows the intersection of the identities of black and white South Africans. Every shot shows a portraiture of a black domestic worker who work in homes owned by the white South African. I find that the hanging of the photos were rather interesting because it was not in a linear manner.
